Tom Flanagan is a scientist in the UCD School of Medicine; Tom’s focus is on tissue engineering. Tom is an award-winning educator, teaching neuroanatomy to medicine students. Working in close collaboration with Mark Pickering, Tom has made visual representation a central pillar of their teaching practice. Human anatomy involves an understanding of complex 3D structure, and neuroanatomy complicates this further by adding a layer of complex function into the mix. They use 3D printing technology to create educational tools to make the notoriously difficult task of understanding the brain and nervous system more manageable to students. However, this approach works most effectively when the task of creating the models is passed from the educator to the learner.
