Professor Philip Nolan is the Director General for Science Foundation Ireland and will discuss the future landscape of research in Ireland and the recently announced research and innovation agency that will arise from a merger of Science Foundation Ireland and the Irish Research Council. Philip studied at UCD where he earned two degrees earned a medical degree and a PhD in Physiology before continuing on to join the academic staff at the university. He was appointed Director of the UCD Conway Institute for Biomolecular and Biomedical Research in 2003, before becoming Registrar and Deputy President at UCD in 2004. In August 2011, Professor Nolan was appointed President of Maynooth University. He was centrally involved in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, as a member of the National Public Health Emergency Team, chairing its disease modelling subgroup. Professor Nolan took up the role of Director-General of SFI on 17 January 2022.
