NIAMH FAULKNER

Director of the Office of Environmental Sustainability EPA

Sharon Finegan was appointed in April 2021 as a Director of the EPA with responsibility for the Office of Environmental Sustainability. Having worked across central Government, Sharon has a broad range of senior management experience and policy expertise particularly in the areas of environmental policy and climate change. Before joining the EPA, Sharon was the Head of the Climate Action Unit in the Department of the Taoiseach. Prior to this, she was Secretary to the Citizens’ Assembly from 20Niamh is a final year PhD Researcher in the Department of Geology at Trinity College Dublin. Her research focuses on the crystallisation of carbonate minerals with the purpose of understanding how to make Carbon Capture and Storage more efficient, less energy intensive and more economically viable. She is an advocate for applying geological thinking to solving the climate crisis. Science communication has been a passion project throughout her PhD, and at times it’s provided a welcomed break from the lab! Niamh’s involvement in science communication provided her the opportunity to work in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean; that project culminated in being selected for the Made at Uni Climate Action campaign. Niamh co-hosts the geology podcast iCRAGorama and has previously worked on initiatives such as Girls into Geoscience. 16-2018 and has held a number of roles including Head of Protocol and Head of Economic Policy in the Department of the Taoiseach. Sharon holds a BA from NUI, Galway and an MSc from Trinity College Dublin.
