Cían joined Google in August 2015 starting DeepMind Health, becoming part of Google Health in 2018. He was one of the original team leading Google's groundbreaking research into using machine learning in diagnostic settings, including the reading of screening mammograms and diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy. Prior to Google, he was an NIHR Clinical Fellow in ENT at UCL; and he is a founding fellow of the UK Faculty of Clinical Informatics. Cian has a particular interest in the application of machine learning to the segmentation of 3D imaging, with recent publications in both Ophthalmology and Radiation Oncology.
